Help End Factory-Farming at AnimalsAustralia.org
Greens TV | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Monday 23rd November 2009, 9:45am
What they never told you:
Most eggs and meat products sold in supermarkets come from factory farms. Many cruel farming systems are being phased out elsewhere in the world, but Australia is lagging behind.
In Australia it is legal to confine a mother pig in a barren metal crate so small that she cannot even turn around. She can be left to suffer in this crate for her entire 4 month pregnancy.
Piglets scream as their tails are routinely cut off (through the bone) without pain relief. Their ears and teeth may also be cut, and the males castrated — all without anaesthetic.
Most eggs sold in supermarkets come from crowded battery hen farms where birds are given a 'living space' smaller than an A4 piece of paper. They cannot even spread their wings.
Farmed animals are just as intelligent, sensitive, and deserving of joy as the cats and dogs we share our homes with. Pigs are even considered to be as smart as 3-year-old children!
Despite having the same capacity to suffer, animals raised for food are excluded from animal cruelty laws that protect the animals we call 'pets'. If you were to treat your dog like an animal in a factory farm, you could be charged with animal cruelty.

Indonesian fishermen encounter oil from the Montara wellhead spill
Greens TV | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Wednesday 11th November 2009, 9:26am
This footage was sent to us by the West Timor Care Foundation, and is just one of many reports in the past several weeks about impacts of the oil spill on the people of Indonesia.
The video appears to show that oil is impacting on legal fishing grounds for Indonesian fishers. We have also heard reports of oil much closer to the Indonesian coast during the past several weeks - and as yet these reported sightings of oil and dead fish are apparently yet to be investigated by Australian authorities.

If your government told you where and how you could spend your money, wouldn't you feel outraged?
If your government said it would only fix essential services to your property as long as you agreed to hand over control of your property for a fixed amount of time, wouldn't that sound ridiculous?
If someone came from outside your community and imposed upon you, your family and friends a system that you could plainly see would cause more problems than it solves, wouldn't you stand up and shout NO!
The truth is, this is how your Government treats Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory. In the NT this is the law. Aboriginal people have been standing up and shouting NO but their voices have been ignored.
