Democracy & Governance

The Greens believe in doing politics differently. We do not accept political donations from big business, and we support public election funding as a way to end the practice of buying political influence.

The Greens believe that there should be more women in politics and we practice what we preach. Of all the Greens Senators to date, six out of seven have been women - a record unmatched by the other parties.

The Australian Greens today called on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to override a comment by Resources Minister Martin Ferguson that the Federal Government would support compulsory acquisition of land for LNG development in the Kimberley

"When making the Apology to Aboriginal Australians early this year, the Prime Minister said we should never repeat the mistakes of the past. His Government is about to do just that," said Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Aboriginal Issues.

Greens condemn Barnett’s old school approach to Kimberley

The Australian Greens today called on Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett to press ahead with the ongoing strategic assessment process to find the best location for an industrial Hub in the Kimberley, saying that he should not approve any LNG developments in the region outside of the agreed process.

"Colin Barnett's attempt to return to the old days of trampling on Aboriginal rights and environmental heritage is inappropriate and out of step," said Senator Rachel Siewert.

The WA Government needs to seriously invest in Indigenous housing, to address inadequate funding in the past by both State and Federal Governments, said the Australian Greens today.

"Both State and Federal governments need to play catch-up fast by investing the funding required to replace or upgrade homes in Indigenous communities," said Senator Rachel Siewert.

A recent WA government audit found that $540 million needs to be spent renovating nearly 2,500 homes in Indigenous communities in Western Australia.

Murray Darling left out to dry: Greens

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert, Sarah Hanson-Young
Wednesday 3rd December 2008, 1:10pm

The passage of the Water Amendment Bill through the Senate will not deliver the best outcomes for the future of the Murray Darling Basin, say the Australian Greens.

"The future health of the Murray Darling system is at stake here, and yet we are still seeing short-term parochial politics ruling in the face of dire circumstances," said Senator Rachel Siewert.

"Make no mistake - the Greens support basin reform - and we have fought all along to make it better and to make it happen sooner," she said.

Water Amendment Bill - Consideration of House of Representatives Message

Speech | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert

The Greens stand by the amendments, believing they are important, particularly in relation to the north-south pipeline-which Senator Minchin has been talking about-which we believe is a bad project. We do not believe that it is for the benefit of the basin and we do not believe it will deliver water for Melbourne, bearing in mind that the Murray-Darling Basin is in crisis, that we are reducing water supply and that we have to cut consumptive water use in the basin by between 42 and 53 per cent. The water that is being saved-once we prove that it is being saved-for the food bowl project should be going back into the Murray. There is no doubt in our or the community's minds that that water needs to be in the Murray.

Greens will stick to guns on water

The Rudd Government need to see sense on the Commonwealth Water Act, and adopt reasonable amendments passed by the Senate, say the Australian Greens.

"I am dismayed at Prime Minister Rudd's attitude to the future security of the Murray Darling Basin," said Senator Rachel Siewert.

"Our leading scientists are warning that we need to significantly reduce water use within the Murray-Darling Basin in the face of a significant and serious reduction in projected levels of run-off as a result of climate change."
