International Issues

The Greens want an independent Australia with a constructive relationship with the rest of the world. Following George Bush has made Australia less safe and a target for terrorism.

The military ‘war on terror’ is not working, and by participating we are contributing to the growing anger towards the West across the Middle East and the Islamic world. Only by addressing the causes of terrorism, not just the symptoms, can we hope to live in a safer world. The first step is to create just relationships with other countries and work towards ending global poverty

Peter Garrett's confirmation that the Government will not be sending a vessel to the Southern Ocean this year to monitor whaling is yet another blow to all those Australians who wanted to see some real action to stop the slaughter.

A full year after the election, and close to a year since obtaining footage of last year's hunt, the Rudd Government has still taken no steps

"I am deeply disappointed and amazed that the Government is not sending a boat down to monitor the Japanese whaling activity this season," said Senator Rachel Siewert.

"With reports that the Japanese fleet have already left port, it is only a matter of time before they start whaling."
