Greens Support call for International Body to Control High Seas

The Australian Greens have supported the call by the IUCN today for urgent action to deal with the growing threat to our oceans from unregulated activity beyond national jurisdictions.

"Ocean mining, iron fertilization, seismic testing, bioprospecting and overfishing are causing increasing problems in oceans around the world and as a consequence the international community needs to respond by establishing an Intergovernmental Panel on the Oceans to assist in the development of policies that respond to these threats," according to Greens Senator Rachel Siewert.

Australia ignores Indigenous rights

The Greens representative on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Senator Rachel Siewert today called on the Government to reconsider its position on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

"Australia should be strongly supporting this declaration" said Senator Rachel Siewert.

"Comments by Mal Brough, who yesterday indicated the government would not support the UN declaration, show how far Australia is now out of step with the rest of the world".

Australia Puts Sawfish Survival at Risk

"The Australian Government is about to embarrass us internationally through its shameful attempt to downgrade a United States proposal to end the trade in sawfish to help ensure their survival," said Greens spokesperson on Fisheries, Senator Rachel Siewert today.  

"The proposal to downgrade the trade in Sawfish is scheduled to be debated at the UN conference on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in The Hague today."
