Food Security

The Greens believe a fundamental global challenge in the face of climate change is how we are going to sustainably and equitably feed nine billion people by the middle of this century. Australia, as one of the world’s few net food exporters, has a critical role to play in achieving global food security.

The Greens understand that we must apply the principles of food sovereignty to the challenge of food security. This means incorporating our agricultural systems as a fundamental part of a sustainable environment, ensuring the social conditions of the people who produce the food are just and fair; and creating food distribution systems and markets that provide everyone with equal access to fresh, affordable food.

Australia’s current policies are barriers to achieving food sovereignty. They undermine the capacity of farmers to stay on the land; value short-term mining and gas extraction over agricultural land and water resources; devalue local food systems and communities, and sustain a distorted domestic food market dominated by a handful of large corporations.
