Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Wednesday 17th March 2010, 10:16am

The Australian Greens have warned the Rudd Government that the signing of a Compact with the Community Sector risks being seen as an empty gesture.

"Signing this important statement of principle as they make fundamental changes to Australia's social security system is not a good look for the Rudd Government," said Greens Senator Rachel Siewert today.

The Federal Government and Coalition have united to ensure that homebirth in Australia will be further marginalised by rejecting amendments to provide midwives with access to indemnity insurance irrespective of the location or venue of the births that they attend, the Australian Greens say.

In addition the government chose to reject Greens amendments that would have taken away the power of doctors to veto aspects of midwifery practice, such as homebirth, that they are philosophically opposed to, despite the near universal evidence that safe low risk homebirth has positive outcomes for mother and child.

"We have consistently said that the Government amendments to their Midwives legislation give doctors too much control over midwives practice," said Greens health spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert.

Sunday 14th March 2010, 12:00am

The Greens today outlined the approach they will take to the Prime Minister's health and hospital's reform plan.

Senate supports Greens call for new OHS laws to set high standards

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Thursday 11th March 2010, 10:30am

The Senate has backed an Australian Greens motion calling on the Government to ensure there is no reduction in occupational health and safety standards anywhere in the nation in implementing their new laws.

"Workers, unions and the community are concerned that the Government's OHS harmonisation agenda will mean lower safety standards rather than the highest possible we should be pursuing", said Senator Siewert.

Greens vow to continue fight against regressive welfare changes

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Wednesday 10th March 2010, 7:48pm

The Australian Greens have expressed deep disappointment at a Senate committee report which goes to great lengths to back the Federal government's regressive welfare changes that would extend income quarantining across the country.

"The approach pursued appears to be one where the legislation will be supported come what may, despite all the evidence to the contrary," said Greens Aboriginal Issues spokesperson, Senator Rachel Siewert.

"The report seeks to make the case for government policies and commitments for which there is neither compelling evidence nor a convincing argument.

Greens renew call for govt to honour election promise to scrap ABCC

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Wednesday 10th March 2010, 5:43pm

The Australian Greens have renewed their call for the Federal Government to fulfil its election promise to abolish the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner and bring Australia's workplace laws in line with international standards.

It comes as a recent International Labour Organisation report heavily criticised the Labor Government for not doing more to ensure our workplace laws comply with international legal obligations.

"As the Australian Greens predicted during the debate on the Fair Work Act, the ILO has found the Act to be non-compliant with ILO conventions relating to freedom of association and collective bargaining," said Rachel Siewert, Greens spokesperson on workplace relations.

Senate passes Greens motion for federal action to fix outback dialysis crisis

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Wednesday 10th March 2010, 5:11pm

The Senate today voted in favour of a Greens motion calling on the Commonwealth Government to intervene to sort out the long lasting cross-border dialysis crisis in Central Australia.

Dialysis patients from South Australia's Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands have been unable to access ongoing treatment in nearby Alice Springs, and are being forced to travel thousands of kilometres to Adelaide for treatment because of a lack of agreement between the SA and NT Governments.

"It's totally unacceptable that this situation has been allowed to drag on for so many months," said Greens Health Spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert today.

The Australian Greens today welcomed the release of a report on the economics of marine protected areas - saying that it showed that protected areas provide a win-win for the economy and the environment.

"Marine protected areas play a vital role in protecting our marine life, but as this report shows, they also play a key role in local economies as well," said Australian Greens Marine Spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert in Perth today.

"I've been a long-term advocate for marine protected areas in Western Australia and am pleased to see greater evidence and public understanding emerging of the crucial role they play in protecting our fisheries, building our tourism industries, and supporting Australia's unmatched coastal lifestyle."

Greens to ensure PM’s health plan leads to increase funding for health services and universal dental care

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Wednesday 3rd March 2010, 4:37pm

The Australian Greens will l be scrutinising the detail of the Prime Minister's health reform plan to ensure that the proposed changes result in greater funding for health services.

We are heartened by the Prime Minister's statement today that ‘universal health care is in his DNA'. With that sentiment in mind, the first thing the PM should commit to is the Greens plan for a universal dental care scheme through Medicare.

The Greens will be announcing our own health reform plan in the lead up to the election.

Now who will take over the other broken environment programs?

Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert
Wednesday 3rd March 2010, 2:24pm

Peter Garrett's problems with poor administration within the Environment portfolio go back further than the recent disasters with the insulation and Green Loans programs, the Australian Greens said today.

"It's all happened before," said Greens Natural Resource Management spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert.

"We first heard similar stories - of bad decisions, confusing processes and lack of attention to detail resulting in significant job losses undermining the viability of an important sector of the green economy - in 2008 with the restructuring of existing natural resource management funding into the Caring for our Country program."

"There have also been a large number of jobs lost, and the sheer amount of time wasted by dedicated workers and volunteers is huge."
