Australian Greens marine spokesperson, Senator Rachel Siewert has today raised concerns about ongoing leaks from the wrecked ship Tycoon at Christmas Island.
“I have had reports from concerned locals about the further impact of this accident on the environment and fumes affecting nearby residents,” Senator Siewert said today.
“The Australian Transport Safety Bureau’s preliminary report into the foundering of the cargo ship has noted at least five areas that require detailed investigation.
“This investigation needs to be completed with due attention to detail but as quickly as possible.
“I am concerned by what appears to be a dispute over who is responsible and this is affecting for the ship’s salvage.
“Such an argument has the potential to limit the cleanup, remedial action or monitoring that may be necessary.
“I have received reports from Christmas Island that materials are still being released from the wrecked ship. These materials include oil and fumes being released near Flying Fish Cove, close to local residents.
“Disputes over responsibility for the salvage should not prevent steps being taken to mitigate the impact of this spill,” Senator Siewert concluded.
