Mal Brough's claims to be deeply disturbed by the conditions in Alice Springs town camps simply don't stand up to scrutiny.
"If Mal really cared he would hand over the money."
"Instead he is crying crocodile tears while trying to bully them into signing all their rights away," said Senator Rachel Siewert this evening.
"Any deal that requires Aboriginal people to sign away their rights to control their own land in exchange for basic services is no deal at all," she said.
"The comments from the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs that attempt to paint the Tangentyere Council as responsible for the terrible living conditions in Alice Springs town camps, and conjure up images of a recent brutal murder, are totally reprehensible."
"Tangenyere Council clearly thought long and hard about this proposal. They looked closely at the deal and determined it was unacceptable."
"The international community will be looking on in disgust as Australia's approach to its first peoples hits a new low."
The Greens support Tangenyere Council's decision to reject this unfair deal and will continue to advocate for basic human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
