Greens Senator for Western Australia Rachel Siewert has renewed her call for a regional plan for the Kimberley region.
"There are a number of massive gas development proposals for the Kimberley region currently being pursed. These proposals could have a devastating impact on the Kimberley environment if they are located in inappropriate areas," she said.
"Unfortunately planning is not keeping up with the development proposals."
"The Kimberley is a very important - it has rich cultural and environmental values, as well as rich resources," said Senator Siewert.
"The area needs a comprehensive regional plan that identifies the best areas for development and the infrastructure that is needed," she said.
"The problem is not the development as such, it is haphazard and piecemeal development with no forward planning."
"We risk making the same mistakes of the south which have led to inappropriate development in sensitive areas, environmental degradation and loss of irreplaceable cultural values," she said.
"We need look no further than the Burrup and the clash of industry with the rock art for a valuable lesson on this."
"I'm calling on the State Government to commence a comprehensive regional planning process that includes all stakeholders," said Senator Siewert.
"If the State continues to fail to take action, then it is imperative that the Commonwealth Government uses its strategic assessment powers to assess development proposals for the Kimberley region," she concluded.
