This World Mental Health Day the Government should announce strong plan to reduce suicide rates

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 10 Oct 2016

On World Mental Health Day Australian Greens Mental Health spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert is calling on the Government to make clear its plan to reduce climbing suicide rates.

“Today Government should reflect on how to reduce increasing suicides rates in this country. We recently learned that suicide rates are at a ten year high, this should urgently jolt the Government into action.

“Australia needs a National Suicide Prevention Target. Mental health stakeholders have repeatedly called for a National Suicide Prevention Target in order to reduce suicides in Australia.

“At a bare minimum the Government should promise that mental health funding is not eroded in the future. I’m deeply concerned that while the NDIS will help a number of people with mental illness, a number of programs at a Commonwealth and State level are being closed, which will leave a large number of people without support. In reality we need further investment in mental health.

“We need to encourage safe conversations on mental health, ensure access to mental health care, quality education and support for service providers”.
