It was devastating to hear on World Mental Health Day that a refusal to increase funding for Lifeline Top End in the Northern Territory has resulted in the shopfront closing its doors, Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert today.
“On World Mental Health day it was particularly saddening that an important service that provided face to face counselling and community engagement closed because the Northern Territory Government refused to increase funding, this was a cruel and I would say dangerous decision.
“When we know suicide rates in Australia are at a ten year high, state and federal Governments should be turning their attention to increased funding, with effort put into keeping important services like those provided by Lifeline Top End afloat.
“According to the ABS, in 2015, the Northern Territory saw 21 deaths per 100,000 people, compared with a 12.6 nationally. Face to face services should not be allowed to shut when suicide rates are so disproportionately high and climbing nationally.
“The Northern Territory Government should re-assess its funding decision”.
