Government has known for too long that the number of Aboriginal kids in out of home care is growing, it is time to act

The Government must urgently respond to the inaugural Family Matters report, which is projecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids in out of home care will almost triple by 2035.

“The growing number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out of home care is a crisis in the system. A near tripling of Aboriginal kids in out of home care by 2035 is a devastating projection, if this doesn’t jolt the Government into action, I’m not sure what will.

“The Government has been consistently warned by communities that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in out of home care is reaching worrying levels, yet the Government is relying on the current approach to fix this, it won't.

"The Family Matters report clearly spells out the problem and the way we need to change to turn the tide on the growing number of kids going into care.

"We need more investment up front in building strong families in prevention and early intervention, in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peak bodies, in Aboriginal controlled organisations and decision making.

"We need leadership from the Federal Government with more focussed increased investment and leading the charge in reworking the third Action plan of the National Framework on Protecting Australia's children.

“We do not want to be apologising for this in decades to come, I urge the Government to do the right thing and listen to our First Peoples who have been raising red flags for years. I urge all members of parliament to sign the commitment to the core principles".
